Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Harriman Institute The Harriman institute is pleased to announce its annual open field post-doctoral fellowship competition. The Postdoctoral Fellows Program enables junior scholars who have recently received the Ph.D. to spend a semester or an academic year) without any obligations other than the revision of their dissertation for publication in book form. Fellows are encouraged to share their work by giving a public presentation, and to participate in lectures and other events. Fellows may use the Harriman Resource Center and the Columbia Libraries.
The primary criterion for such fellowships is excellence. Evidence of the dissertation’s potential to make a significant contribution to the study of Eurasia and Eastern Europe weighs most in the Fellowship Committee's selection of fellows. Postdoctoral fellows must have received the Ph.D. within the three years prior to the fellowship period for which they are applying. Candidates cannot hold a faculty position and must have successfully defended their dissertations by June 1, 2011 and deposit them before the start of the academic year in early September in order to receive their fellowships.
To apply, candidates should send the following materials to the Harriman Institute Fellowship Committee by January 10, 2011 (fellowships begin the following September): • A curriculum vitae; • A substantial portion of the dissertation; • Three letters of recommendation; • A research plan outlining how their time will be spent at the Institute.
Decisions regarding the selection of Postdoctoral Fellows are made no later than March 17; applicants will be notified in a timely manner.

Call for Papers Sots-Speak: Regimes of Language under Socialism May 13-15, 2011

The attempt to build communism in Eastern Europe was accompanied by the development of a distinctive language paradigm, first in the Soviet Union, then—by a process of cultural translation and local adaptation—in the satellite states of the Socialist Bloc. The official discourse possessed its own "speech genres” (tied to specific communicative contexts, social roles, and political tasks), easily recognizable rhetorical patterns and lexical peculiarities. It is intuitively obvious that this discourse, which we provisionally label sots-speak, was instrumental in legitimizing and perpetuating the political system, in shaping individual psychologies and cultural expressions. However, our knowledge of its exact nature and practical existence remains sketchy, as the topic still awaits systematic research. The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars whose work helps shed light on the politico-ideological idiom(s) of state socialism, so that we can begin to develop a sophisticated, multi-layered picture of this special universe of discourse. A deeper understanding of its constitutive linguistic features and the tendencies that define its evolution represents a major desideratum on its own; yet we see this understanding as prerequisite for engaging in questions of broader cultural significance and soliciting a range of (inter)disciplinary inquiries (sociolinguistics, social psychology, anthropology, philosophy, cultural and literary studies, political science, etc.). The following questions merely suggest a few general ways in which to frame our investigation; each of the areas can be illuminated through analysis of specific topics:
What is the relation between the linguistic theories and utopias of the cultural avant-garde and the linguistic regimes of state socialism? Can we isolate and analyze expressive features uniquely native to these regimes? What are the stable rhetorical patterns and lexical inventories of sots-speak? Postgraduate/Graduate Article Competition for Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema (SRSC)
In
2011 Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema enters its fifth year of
publication. It has established itself as a scholarly journal of high
ranking, with a rigorous, anonymous double peer review system.
In
the Soviet tradition of the grand public celebration of anniversaries,
we have decided to mark the journal’s fifth birthday with an essay
competition.
Articles on any aspect of Russian/Soviet cinema
will be considered, with a maximum length of 6,000 words. These should
be original works, and not have been submitted for publication
elsewhere. The texts should be sent to the Editor, at the address
below, with the name of an academic supervisor (including email) who
can be contacted to confirm that the author is a doctoral student at a
Higher Education Institution. All submissions must be in English, and
non-native speakers are advised to have their texts "styled” before
submission.
Deadline for submission: 1 April 2011
The
jury will be composed of the journal’s co-editors; they will assess the
submissions anonymously. Results will be available by 1 September 2011. First
Prize: £150, a year’s free subscription to the journal, and three
Intellect books of your choice. The winning article will of course
appear in SRSC, in volume 5.3 (2011).
Факультет социологии и политологии МВШСЭН (www.msses.ru) объявляет конкурс грантов на обучение по программам
"Фундаментальная социология" и "Политическая социология и
политические исследования" в 2010-2011 учебном году. По итогам
обучения выпускники факультета получают диплом магистра Манчестерского
университета (Master of Arts) и российский диплом о профессиональной
переподготовке. Продолжительность обучения по программе - 1 год. Во время
обучения слушателям выплачивается стипендия.
Программа Фулбрайта для преподавателей вузов (FFDP) предоставляет гранты на
2010-2011 академический год преподавателям российских вузов.
Гранты на конкурсной основе выдаются на стажировку по специальности, а также
проведение научно-исследовательской работы в университете и/или архиве США,
а также подразумевают составление учебных планов по конкретной дисциплине. В
грант включена ежемесячная стипендия, ограниченная медицинская страховка и
оплата транспортных расходов.
Требования к соискателям
* Российское гражданство и постоянное проживание на территории
РФ,
начиная с января 2010 года.
* Владение английским языком в пределах, необходимых для обучения
или
стажировки.
* Возраст соискателей: дата рождения - не старше 40 лет на момент
подачи
документов (дата рождения: не ранее 15 июня 1970 г.). .
* Наличие стажа работы по выбранной дисциплине - не менее 2-х лет.
* Для соискателей, ранее получавших визу J-1: временной промежуток
со
дня возвращения в Россию до момента подачи документов на конкурс должен быть
не менее 2-х лет.
* Отсутствие ученой степени ИЛИ ученая степень, присвоенная после

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Academic Journal Writing Workshop for PhD students Finland, 19-23 July 2010
Publishing journal articles in peer reviewed journals in English has been an increasing trend in the academia, and is nowadays a requirement
for anyone wishing to have a serious career in Sociology. The skill of article writing is however not always a part of the PhD training, furthermore, there are diverse myths on what makes a good manuscript, and how to internationalize one's research in a meaningful way. This ESA
Summer School wishes to provide a platform for both learning about this specific form of writing, and a creative and supportive environment to finalize a manuscript during the course.
The Summer School is aimed to work as an aid for PhD students struggling
with an article manuscript in progress. You are welcome to apply if you currently work with a manuscript. The text can be a manuscript in the finalizing stage before initial submission, or after a review process,
working with the final editing.
The requirement is that you have a full text in English to work on, a draft that can be circulated among participants by June 28th 2010.
The Summer School is co-organized by the Sociology Departments of
University of Turku and University of Helsinki, and the ESA. The Summer School takes place in a beautiful setting in the archipelago of Finland, the Archipelago Research Institute of University of Turku in Seili,

ESA covers all costs for the course, the accommodation and all meals. Students will need

computers.

Клуб российских членов Европейской Академии приглашает молодых
российских ученых принять участие в 17-м конкурсе на соискание премий
Европейской академии.
Премии Европейской Академии учреждены для поощрения и поддержки наиболее
талантливых молодых ученых России. В 17-ом конкурсе (2010 г.) могут участвовать
лица, не достигшие 34 лет к 31 декабря 2010 г. Премии присуждаются за фундаментальные
научные исследования, выполненные в России и опубликованные в виде книг или
статей в ведущих научных журналах.
В 2010 г.
будет присуждено 23 премии по 1000 долларов США по следующим областям знаний:
математика/механика, физика, химия, науки о Земле, биология, медицина,
гуманитарные науки. Вместе с премией лауреат получит Почетный диплом
Европейской Академии и медаль Клуба российских членов Европейской Академии.

Студенческое объединение Copernicus (Германия) приглашает студентов из
России принять участие в стипендиальной программе. Длительность программы
составляет около полугода. Программа включает в себя четырехмесячное обучение в
одном из университетов Германии (в Берлине, Гамбурге или Мюнхене) и
двух-трехмесячную практику на одном из немецких предприятий.
Организаторы оплачивают все необходимые затраты стипендиатов: еду, проживание,
медицинскую страховку, транспортные расходы, а также выделяют небольшие карманные
деньги (на данный момент - 180 евро в месяц).
Данная программа рассчитана на студентов старших курсов (начиная с 3-го),
обучающихся по следующим специальностям: гуманитарные науки, право,
политология, общественные и социальные науки, архитектура.
Крайний срок подачи заявок – 1 марта 2010 года. Начало программы - 1

Объявляется прием заявок на участие
в очередном открытом конкурсе на получение стипендий Фонда Карнеги в
области истории понятий, истории идей, социологии, антропологии,
политических наук и лингвистики. Стипендии фонда Карнеги
предоставляются для проведения и написания исследовательской работы в
течение осеннего семестра 2009 года в Санкт-Петербурге.
К участию приглашаются российские исследователи из регионов (кроме Москвы и Санкт-Петербурга) - кандидаты и доктора наук.
Стипендии для региональных исследователей предполагают пребывание в Санкт-Петербурге в течение семестра (с 15 сентября по 31 декабря)
и включают в себя ежемесячную стипендию (600 у.е.) в рублевом
эквиваленте, расходы на дорогу, проживание, административную поддержку.
Совет молодых ученых РГГУ и Управление
по координации вузовских проектов и программ проводят КОНКУРС
СТУДЕНЧЕСКИХ НАУЧНЫХ РАБОТ «ТРЕТЬЕКУРСНИК-ИССЛЕДОВАТЕЛЬ –
2009».
На конкурс представляются
самостоятельно выполненные работы студентов III курса дневного отделения,
ориентированные на стандарт курсовой работы и содержащие научные разработки по
избранной теме в соответствии с программами профильных учебных дисциплин.
